I was invited to give this talk last week by the queer club at a local college (16-17 age group), and the students were SO GREAT, I felt very welcomed!

The biggest unanswered question in nearly every book, article, and video on note-taking I have seen is:
WHAT DO YOU DO AFTER YOU HAVE TAKEN NOTES?!
Well, to misquote the great Carl Sagan, before you can write an essay from scratch, you must first invent the universe.

I've spent my whole adult life chasing ergonomics tricks and hacks to solve my constant back problems and, most recently, terrible RSI. I was able to stave off problems for a long time with ergonomic keyboards and such, but it would always catch up with me eventually.

Ten years ago I was testing out a posture brace for my back to alleviate some problems that I was having whilst sitting at my desk. A colleague who was a competitive weightlifter remarked that what I was doing was a waste of time, and that I needed to start lifting heavy weights instead. If only I had listened then I could have saved myself a great deal of suffering and money!

I started exploring powerlifting 5 years ago, but fell back to bad habits because I didn't take it seriously. This year I started lifting regularly, and at the end of the summer rediscovered powerlifting.

After they learned this relatively small language, they could then have spent DECADES writing JUST C, one language for all programs, on all devices.
I wonder if you can see where I'm going with this?

Every single day I write electronic music, podcasts, and videos, all produced on Linux using mostly free, open-source software, on whatever cheap hardware is within reach.

Today I'm going to tell you about my whole creative process:
The production processes that have worked for me, and even a little on how I got here - as it explains why and how I'm doing all this in the first place, and allows me to make some recommendations.

I've built a small website at http://brainmade.org with high-resolution black or white versions of the logo available for download and attaching to your own projects if you'd like to.

I want to be clear about my reasoning for building this:

Today's sponsor: Quadratic, check them out at https://quadratichq.com/?utm_campaign=noboilerplate

When I write a new Rust program, I don't start with functions or methods or any runtime code. I start with the model of my application, expressed with Rust's rich type system.
Interacting with the real-world, on disk or through the network is too slow for me, at first, I need to iterate faster than that, to sketch out my ideas, unconstrained by the outside world.

This compile-checked whiteboarding I call Compiler-Driven Development.

I have grown from an autistic child who needed weekly lessons from a childhood psychiatrist in order to learn how to make eye contact, into an autistic adult who is flying high in an aeroplane made out of comprehensive coping mechanisms.
The way I have made sense of my life, is to find repeated patterns and groupings of traits, the same as we do for the night sky. There does appear to be a unifying autistic core trait, however, which surprised me:
Detail-oriented thinking.

One day, as happens now and then with a bleeding-edge rolling release distro, a systemd update reversed my mouse buttons.
The great thing about rolling-release and cutting-edge distributions like Arch Linux, is that you get to be a beta tester, whether you like it or not!
I thought this was the way it had to be on Linux: Stability or cutting-edge features, not both.
But that wasn't right at all, with NixOS you can have everything, everywhere all at once!
